Hormones vs. Pheromones

Both Hormones and Pheromones are the chemicals formed in the body that are used for signaling. Both of the Hormones and Pheromones are the proteins mostly. Both are produced inside the body. The main difference between hormones and pheromones is that that the hormones act inside the body of an organism but pheromones functions outside the body. Pheromones are only found in the animals but on the other hand, hormones are present not only in animals but also plants.

What is Hormones?

In the bodies of multicellular organisms there is a chemical used for messaging inside the bodies known as Hormone. Signals are transmitted from one part of the body to the other through hormones. Basically these hormones get birth in the glands from where they get in to the circulatory system of the blood and thus transmit and target the specific message at target place through circulatory system. Hormones are of two types while referring to the type of gland from which they get produced i.e. endocrine and exocrine. Exocrine hormones get in to the ducts while endocrine hormones directly released in to the blood stream. According to consistency, hormones are of three types i.e. Peptides, Lipids and Poly Amines but most of the hormones are proteins.

What is Pheromones?

Pheromones are the chemicals released exterior to the animals only (excluding plants) those trigger social responses in the individual to the same species. They have quite influence the other individual by acting outside the body of an animal. Most of the pheromones are proteins. While referring to the function, pheromones are of two types i.e. Aggregation Pheromones and Repellent Pheromones. Main function of the pheromones is the male selections of the animal. Pheromones do attract sexual partner or change a sex partner behavior.

Key Differences between Hormones and Pheromones

  1. Hormones and Pheromones both produce inside the body of an organism but the difference between the two is that the hormones act inside the body of an organism but pheromones functions outside the body.
  2. As hormones produce and act inside of the body, thus causes the alterations in behavior of organism but pheromones act externally being capable of altering the social behaviors of others.
  3. Pheromones are only found in the animals but on the other hand, hormones are present not only in animals but also plants.
  4. Pheromones influence your sex partner or attract towards you but hormones don’t act like that.
  5. Main function of the pheromones is the male selections of the animal but pheromones act differently.
  6. Hormones are of two types while referring to the type of gland from which they get produced i.e. endocrine and exocrine. While referring to the function, pheromones are of two types i.e. Aggregation Pheromones and Repellent Pheromones.
