O Positive vs. O Negative

O Positive and O Negative are actually the types of blood groups. There are four types of blood groups A, B AB and O. O blood group is further categorized into O positive and O negative. These groups are made on the basis of blood components known as markers or antigens. Rh factor is also a marker. O positive is a blood group that contains Rh factor without markers of A or B, while O negative is a blood group that doesn’t contains Rh factor and also doesn’t have A or B markers.

What is O Positive?

O positive is a blood type that doesn’t have the A or B markers and has an Rh factor. It doesn’t have antigens in red blood cells. It has anti-A antibodies and anti-B antibodies and thus acts against A and B blood types. O positive blood group people can receive blood from O positive or O negative donor. O positive blood group people can give their blood to the people with A positive, B positive, AB positive and O positive blood groups.

What is O Negative?

O negative is a blood group that neither has the A or B markers nor the Rh factor. In its plasma, it doesn’t has anti-A antibodies and anti-B antibodies. People with O negative blood group can donate their blood to all types of blood groups either A, B, AB, O, their -ve and +ve. Thus it is also called a universal donor.

Key Differences between O Positive and O Negative

  1. positive blood has Rh factor on cell membrane while O negative blood doesn’t have Rh factor.
  2. positive has anti-A antibodies and anti-B antibodies in its plasma while O negative doesn’t have.
  3. negative is a universal donor but O positive can only be given to A positive, B positive, AB positive and O positive blood.
